After 9 years of living in Biarritz, we’ve been reflecting on the points that make this town truly a unique place to call home. Situated on the Bay of Biscay in the Basque region of France, Biarritz boasts stunning coastal scenery characterized by rugged cliffs, golden beaches, and the powerful Atlantic Ocean. Some of our photos along the Basque coast have made us question if it was Hawaii or the Basque coast. Whether its the surf, the hiking trails or the beaches, there is a little something for everyone.

  1. Surfing Culture: Biarritz is often referred to as the surfing capital of Europe, thanks to its world-class waves and vibrant surfing culture. Surfers flock to spots like Grande Plage and Côte des Basques to catch some of the best waves in Europe, making Biarritz a mecca for surfers of all levels.

  2. Basque Heritage: As part of the Basque Country, Biarritz is steeped in Basque heritage and traditions. Visitors can explore Basque architecture, cuisine, music, and dance, experiencing a rich cultural tapestry that sets Biarritz apart from other French destinations.

  3. Luxury Lifestyle: Biarritz has long attracted aristocrats, celebrities, and royalty since the 19th century. Today, it continues to exude an air of luxury and sophistication, with upscale hotels, gourmet restaurants, designer boutiques, and prestigious golf courses catering to discerning travelers.

  4. Thermal Spas: Biarritz is renowned for its thermal spas and wellness centers, where visitors can indulge in relaxation and rejuvenation treatments inspired by the city's natural thermal springs. The healing properties of these mineral-rich waters have been cherished for centuries, making Biarritz a sought-after destination for spa enthusiasts.

  5. Historic Landmarks: Biarritz is home to several historic landmarks that reflect its rich past, including the iconic Biarritz Lighthouse, the opulent Hôtel du Palais (formerly the royal residence of Napoléon III and Eugénie de Montijo), and the ornate Russian Orthodox Church. These architectural gems offer glimpses into Biarritz's aristocratic past and cultural heritage.

  6. Gastronomic Delights: Food lovers will delight in Biarritz's culinary scene, which blends Basque flavors with French influences to create a tantalizing array of dishes. From fresh seafood and pintxos (Basque tapas) to hearty Basque steaks and decadent pastries, Biarritz offers a gastronomic adventure for every palate.

  7. Year-Round Events: Biarritz hosts a variety of events and festivals throughout the year, celebrating everything from surfing and music to film and food. Highlights include; FIPADOC/NOUVELLE VAGUES (Documentary Film Festivals) - BIARRITZ PIANO FESTIVAL, LE TEMPS D’AIMER LA DANSE (Dance festival), FESTIVAL BIARRITZ AMERIQUE LATINE (Latin American Film Festival), WHEELS AND WAVES FESTIVAL, each neighborhood’s parties, operas, ballets, art expositions, Pelote Basque matches, rugby matches, and holiday events like the festival of lights/animations during December and Halloween the week of the 31st of October. All these events ensure there's always something exciting happening in the city.

When we first came to Biarritz back in 2013, it was still a sleepy surf village with a smaller population where most restaurants would be closed for periods during the Winter months. Today, Biarritz has a thriving full-time population with restaurants remaining open throughout what used to be the slow months, and so many activities and festivals scheduled that it will keep you on your toes. Overall, Biarritz's unique combination of natural beauty, cultural heritage, luxury amenities, and vibrant atmosphere makes it a truly special destination unlike any other in France.
